Contents Protection
Contents protection at Heaps Self Store
We take the security of your belongings seriously, but no storage environment is entirely without risk. That is why all customers storing with us need to have suitable cover in place for their goods, in line with Self Storage Association guidance.
Can I use my own insurance?
You are welcome to use your own home or business insurance, but it is worth checking the detail carefully before you do. Many policies provide limited or no cover for items held in self storage, and making a claim could affect your future premiums. For most customers, our specialist contents protection plan, StoreProtect, is the simpler and more straightforward choice.
What is StoreProtect?
StoreProtect is designed specifically for self storage, covering both personal and business goods. It works on a new-for-old basis, so if something is lost or damaged, you are covered for what it would cost to replace it brand new rather than its second-hand value. It also means that if you opt in, you are no longer required to arrange separate insurance for your stored goods.
We offer five levels of cover to suit different storage needs, and higher cover is available on request. There is a £50 administration charge deducted from any settlement, and a £50 excess applies on claims.
How do I get started?
When you book, you simply tell us the total replacement value of everything you plan to store. It is important to be accurate here. If you undervalue your goods and need to make a claim, any payout could be reduced in proportion to the shortfall. If you are not sure where to start, just ask us and we will help you work it out.
What is and is not covered?
StoreProtect covers loss or damage caused by a breach of our duty of care, including theft by forcible entry and damage caused by us or our team. It does not cover things like gradual deterioration, damage caused by pests from within your own unit, mould unless caused by water coming in from outside your unit, or damage resulting from how your goods were packed or loaded. Vehicles stored outside a unit, perishables, and certain high-value items such as jewellery over £1,000 are also excluded or restricted.
